Not only is Silverlight not going anywhere, but Microsoft is making sure that the technology is expanded on as many of its platforms as possible.

Customers running the latest two iterations of Windows Embedded Standards can download and install the most recent version of Silverlight, tailored for the componentized and embedded variant of Windows.

Silverlight 4 is available for download for both Windows Embedded Standard 2009 and Windows Embedded Standard 7.

“Silverlight is a powerful development platform for creating engaging, interactive user experiences for Web, desktop, and mobile applications when online or offline.

“Silverlight is a free plug-in, powered by the .NET framework and compatible with multiple browsers, devices and operating systems, bringing a new level of interactivity wherever the Web works,” revealed Lynda Allen, Microsoft Embedded program manager.

Of course, as it is the case with various Windows Embedded Standard goodies, Silverlight 4 is only available through the ECE website to customers with valid accounts.

“For Standard 7 you can grab the feature from this ECE link- Microsoft Silverlight 4 for Windows Embedded Standard 7. This feature is for use with the Windows Embedded Standard 7 compatible application templates here.

“For Standard 2009, Silverlight 4 is the only out-of-band feature in the November 2010 Feature Update for Windows Embedded Standard 2009,” Allen added.

As far as the desktop version of Silverlight is concerned, Microsoft is hard at work on the next version of the technology.

The promise is that Silverlight 5 will be available for Beta testers in the first half of 2011, with the final release planned sometime by the end of next year.

With the announcement of Silverlight 5, Microsoft underlined that it continues to be committed to the technology, despite the focus on HTML5.
