Microsoft has certainly produced a wide variety of themes for Windows 7, featuring anything from cute puppies and kittens, to exotic landscapes, cartoons, and super-cars, but the company is now offering the scariest theme pack for the operating system yet.

Eerie Autumn is now available for download from the Windows Personalization Gallery, offered free of charge, just as all the themes featured on the site.

The fact that Halloween is just around the corner is of course, no mere coincidence.

After all, the Redmond company released a Valentine’s Day theme for users of Windows Vista’s successor, and there are additional themes tailored to more holiday, including Christmas, so it was to be expected to the software giant to also find a way to celebrate Halloween.

“Scared much? Gargoyles, gourds, and ghostly creatures haunt this eerily elegant Windows 7 theme,” reads the theme pack’s description.

The theme delivers on Microsoft’s promise to put something eerie on Windows 7 desktops everywhere with an impressive collection of wallpapers.

No less than 15 background images are included in the theme pack, and you’ll be able to access previews of the contents via the screenshots included in this article.

But if you were to ask me, what truly makes the delight of the Eerie Autumn theme for Windows 7 is the combination between the imagery packed in the theme pack and the sounds featured by the theme.

Installing Eerie Autumn in Windows 7 will change not only the Aero settings but also the sound scheme of the operating system.

Essentially, your computer will sound like bits and pieces of a horror flick, with some absolutely delightful sounds. My personal favorites are the sounds used for Empty Recycle Bin and Windows Shutdown.

But by all means, install the theme, try it out, and tell me what you think.
