Telltale is bringing the comedy video game series Sam & Max to the iOS platform with the release of Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space Ep. 1.

“Team up with Sam & Max, self-styled Freelance Police with their own brand of criminal justice,” says Telltale. “Uncover clues, interrogate suspects, and crack some bizarre cases, and find out why Sam & Max is the funniest game around!”

This first episode - Ice Station Santa - plunges Sam and Max in a fight against “the most ancient and powerful opponent they've ever faced, a hairy, bloated, pagan God - Santa Claus!”

The iOS game has been designed and written with the help of Steve Purcell, the creator of the original Sam & Max comic series.

Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space Ep. 1 brings a platform-exclusive mini game called 'Whack da Ratz,' which the developers included in the episode main menu. The mini game has players competing for top score in the Freelance Police Hall of Fame.

For novices, there’s a built-in hint system that detects when a player is stuck and there’s a soundboard that lets you “create new and deranged quotes from your favorite Sam & Max lines.”

“Can the Freelance Police make sense of this Christmas conundrum in time to save the world's children from a holiday tainted by tears, turmoil, and Torture-Me-Elmer?”, adds Telltale.

Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space Ep. 1 is a 265 MB download from the iTunes App Store. It’s compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and requires iOS 4.2 or later.

Priced at $6.99 (5.49 EUR), the game requires at least an iPhone 3GS, or third-generation equivalent iPod touch (or newer devices) to run.
