Apple has updated its Support section with a new release of Safari, the standard web browser on Macintosh computers. Version 4.0.3 improves the stability, compatibility and security of the web browser and is recommended for all users.

On the Support section of its web site, Apple describes the Safari 4.0.3 update as follows:

About Safari 4.0.3
This update is recommended for all Safari users and includes improvements to stability, compatibility and security including:
- Stability improvements for webpages that use the HTML 5 video tag
- Stability improvements for 3rd-party plug-ins
- Stability improvements for Top Sites
- Fixes an issue that prevented some users from logging into iWork.com
- Fixes an issue that could cause web content to be displayed in greyscale instead of color

The Mac maker reveals that there’s further information to be had with the release, pointing visitors of its web site to an additional Support page. There, the company says, detailed info on the security content of the update can be found. We will be discussing this aspect of the Safari 4.0.3 update.

Posted August 11, 2009, Safari 4.0.3 is 40MB in size on Leopard and weighs in at 26MB on Tiger. The Windows version of the update is roughly 27MB large. The browser requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or 10.5.7 (Leopard), Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) plus security update 2009-003 on the Mac side, or Vista and XP on the Windows side. Supported languages include German, English, and French.

Safari 4 brings remarkable new features, like Top Sites and Cover Flow. Thanks to the former, users can enjoy a stunning, at-a-glance preview of their favorite websites, while Safari tracks the sites they browse and ranks their favorites. Of course, Safari isn’t the only browser that does this. Opera Software’s popular web browser has an almost identical feature called Speed Dial.

Cover Flow, on the other hand, offers a more visual way of reviewing your site history and bookmarked sites. The feature, typical to Apple software, displays full-page previews of the websites that look exactly as they did when you last visited them.
