Microsoft is offering customers running Data Protection Manager 2010 a fix designed to resolve problems they can come across in relation to SQL Server Management Studio.

According to information provided by the Redmond company, issues impact only early adopters that have been involved in the testing of DPM 2010, running the Beta or Release Candidate (RC) Builds.

The software giant also informs that customers who at some point evaluated DPM 2010 can also come across glitches.

However, issues have only been reported in scenarios in which pre-release and Eval versions of the System Center component were upgraded to the retail version.

“When you install DPM 2010 Beta, DPM 2010 RC or DPM 2010 Evaluation and upgrade the product to a retail version of DPM 2010. Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio has two issues.

•Issue 1: SQL Server Management Studio does not start, and you receive an error message.

•Issue 2: SQL Server Management Studio starts. But on the Help menu, you receive the message that SQL management tool will expire in number day,” Microsoft informed.

The software giant explains that the problems mentioned above are generated by the System Center Data Protection Manager 2010 upgrade.

More specifically, the upgrade process of DPM 2010 does not cover the SQL Server Management Tools.

Fortunately enough, the SQL Edition Upgrade for Data protection Manager 2010 (DPM) Instance tool is now available free of charge via the Microsoft Download Center to make up for that.

Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2010 “delivers unified data protection for Windows servers such as SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint, Virtualization and file servers -- as well as Windows desktops and laptops,” Microsoft stated.

“DPM seamlessly uses disk, tape, and cloud-based repositories to deliver an easy-to-use and best-of-breed backup and recovery solution for Windows environments from Microsoft.

“Windows customers of all sizes can rely on Microsoft to provide a scalable and manageable protection solution that is cost-effective, secure, and reliable.”
