Available as a free download from Microsoft, the latest version of Remote Server Administration Tools is tailored to computers running Windows 7 RTM or SP1.
IT pros already familiar with the solution will find that there’s nothing new introduced besides support for Windows 7 SP1.
The tool continues to enable the management of roles and features on Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2003 machines remotely from a PC with either Windows 7 RTM or SP1.
Of course, not only are Windows Server 2008 R2 machines supported, but also servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, released concomitantly with Service Pack 1 for Windows 7.
Support for the roles and features that can be managed in Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2003 is limited.
Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 SP1 comes with “support for remote management of computers that are running either the Server Core or full installation options of Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2, and for some roles and features, Windows Server 2008,” Microsoft explained.
“Some roles and features on Windows Server 2003 can be managed remotely by using Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 with SP1, although the Server Core installation option is not available with the Windows Server 2003 operating system.”
Not all Windows 7 SP1 customers will be able to leverage the Remote Server Administration Tools.
According to Microsoft, the management solution is designed to play nice only with the Enterprise, Professional, and Ultimate SKUs of Windows 7 with SP1.
Microsoft is offering Knowledge Base article 958830 to IT administrators that need more information on the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 with SP1.
