A new resource available as a free download from Microsoft is designed to streamline the migration from older versions of Project Server to the latest iteration of the product. The
“Project Server 2010 Upgrade Paths” guide is currently available through the Microsoft Download Center, offering customers a document describing the options at their disposal when upgrading from Project Server 2003 or 2007 to Project Server 2010. Customers that will download the “Project Server 2010 Upgrade Paths” will essentially get a poster which will guide them through making the jump from any of the two predecessors of Project Server 2010 to the latest release offered by Microsoft.
“Project Server 2010 is a 64-bit application and can only run on a Windows Server 2008 64-bit or a Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit operating system. You must have hardware that supports the use of a 64-bit operating system. If you are planning an in place upgrade, your Project Server 2007 installation must be running on either of these two 64-bit operating systems,” the software giant explained.
The document offers not only the Upgrade Roadmap for Project Server 2010, but also guides IT professionals through the planning process, and simplifies upgrading the Building Blocks. Of course, at the same time, the guide explains the limitations of the upgrading process. For example, customers will not be able to perform in-place upgrades from Project Server 2007 installed on a 32-bit (x86) operating system. “You must install Project Server 2010 on a different computer that supports 64-bit applications, and then migrate your data to it by using the database attach upgrade process,” Microsoft explained.
In fact, Project Server 2010 is only supported on two versions of Windows, namely Windows Server 2008 64-bit and Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit. Of course, there are additional requirements, including IE7 or IE8 for Project Server 2010 Project Web App, or the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP3 with Cumulative Update 3 (64-bit) and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1 with Cumulative Update 2 (64-bit) as the databases for which the product is tailored to.
“Microsoft Project Server 2010, built on SharePoint Server 2010, provides organizations with flexible work management solutions. Project Server 2010 unifies project and portfolio management to help organizations align resources and investments with business priorities, gain control across all types of work, and visualize performance through powerful dashboards,” Microsoft revealed.
