Microsoft is right on track to delivering a taste of an upcoming release of Windows 7 by the end of this month.

Windows Thin PC (WinTPC) was announced officially in early February 2011, with the company noting at the time that this particular flavor of the Windows client was designed for customers leveraging virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments.

Back in February 2011, the software giant also promised that WinTPC would be made available for download in the first quarter of this year.

It looks like Microsoft lived up to the promise, with the first Customer Technology Preview (CTP) of Windows Thin PC planned for delivery by the end of March 2011.

I don’t have additional details about the WinTPC CTP launch at this point in time, but next week I’ll have a chat with a Microsoft employee working with the Windows team, and I’ll make sure to ask for additional information then.

So if you have any questions related to Windows Thin PC, please send them over using either the comments section bellow or my Twitter account.

For those that don’t know, WinTPC is “a locked down version of Windows 7, designed for you to repurpose your existing PCs as thin clients, so you can get the most out of your hardware investments,” revealed Microsoft general manager for Windows product management Gavriella Schuster.

I’m willing to bet that the WinTPC CTP will go live on Microsoft Connect at least, and I don’t see the software giant offering a broad development milestone of this flavor of Windows 7, since it’s designed for business customers and VDI scenarios.

Even after RTM Windows Thin PC will not be available to all, but will be delivered, at no extra cost, as a benefit to customers with Microsoft Software Assurance license agreements.
