Although it has already released to manufacturing and offered customers a new iteration of its Windows Embedded platform, Microsoft is also introducing new features for the predecessor of Windows Embedded Standard 7. Windows Embedded customers can grab the May 2010 Feature Update for Windows Embedded Standard 2009 from the Microsoft Mobile & Embedded Communications Extranet (ECE) site. The update is designed to bring to the table a couple of new features such as Web Services on Devices API and Powershell 2.0.

“Web Services on Devices API - this feature consists of a WSDAPI component and also the Web Service on Devices API SDK. The component can be applied to a Windows Embedded Standard 2009 database, and the SDK can be installed on a developer machine,” Lynda Allen, Microsoft Embedded program manager, revealed.

“Powershell 2.0 - this is a macro component that provides all the required dependencies to install Poweshell 2.0 on a Windows Embedded Standard 2009 runtime. The Poweshell 2.0 installer is not included in the package and can be sourced as part of the Windows Management Framework Core package. Windows PowerShell is an extensible automation engine from Microsoft, consisting of a command-line shell and associated scripting language. Windows PowerShell is built on top of, and is integrated with, the Microsoft .NET Framework. Additionally PowerShell enables easy access to COM and WMI to provide an environment in which administrators perform administrative tasks on both local and remote Windows systems,” she added.

Of course, the May 2010 Feature Update for Windows Embedded Standard 2009 can only be accessed by customers with an ECE account. At the same time, the Windows Embedded Standard 7 RTM bits are available for testing from the software giant. The successor of Windows Embedded Standard 2009, Windows Embedded Standard 7, is intimately connected with Windows 7, and features enhancements specific to the desktop client. 32-bit (x86) Windows Embedded Standard 7 RTM, 64-bit (x64) Windows Embedded Standard 7 RTM and the Windows Embedded Standard 7 Evaluation toolkit are available for download here.
