A new version of the Opera Mobile browser is now available for download for users of a handset running under the Symbian operating system, namely Opera Mobile 10.1 beta 2.

According to the Norwegian software company Opera Software, the new release comes with a nice range of enhancements and novelties, though it also includes a series of known issues, some of which might be expected on a beta release.

The new Opera Mobile 10.1 beta version for Symbian sports an ARM optimized version of the company's latest Carakan JavaScript engine.

Through this new feature, the JavaScript execution speed has been increased four times, Opera Software announced.

As stated above, the solution is only in beta at the moment, and it comes with a series of known issues, including:

- Higher memory usage for Carakan with JIT compilation. - Due to timing issues with different geolocation information providers (WiFi, cell towers, GPS) first request may have poor precision - Fast scrolling on Touch devices not optimized for page rendering - Opera Link may not work when using APN with a proxy configured - Some SVGT images may appear to freeze on Nokia E-series phones - If SIM card is not registered, or phone is in flight mode, first geolocation request in a browser session may fail

However, Opera notes that they released the new version of Opera Mobile 10.1 beta to Symbian users so as to receive feedback on the updated JavaScript engine.

The company encourages all users of Symbian-based mobile phones, advanced or novice,to try out the new application and report on the bugs they find in it.

Those of you interested in learning more info on the Carakan JavaScript engine and JIT should head over to the company's website here.

The new Opera Mobile 10.1 Beta 2 for S60 can be downloaded directly on the handset from m.opera.com/next, but it is available for download from Softpedia too, via this link.
