The latest development snapshot of Opera 11.10 codenamed Barracuda provides early adopters with a much more reliable release compared to previous testing Builds, thanks to a number of stability improvements introduced. Opera Software provided no less than two Builds of Opera 11.10 Beta on April 5th, enhancing user experience, but also providing new goodies for developers to play around with.

Opera 11.10 Beta Build 2079 allows web devs to build projects that leverage the HTML5 File API.

Ruarí Ødegaard did warn that support for this particular application programming interface is not at 100% just yet, but added that the Norway-based browser vendor is working to remedy this.

As far as the current Beta Build of Opera 11.10 is concerned however, FileReader, Files in HTMLInputElement, FileReaderSync in WebWorkers, Blob interface, File interface, FileException in WebWorkers, FileError and Blob.slice() are all supported.

Similarly to the HTML5 File API support, the existing implementation of SOCKS, a network routing protocol, is also incomplete.

At the same time, work has been done to ensure that Opera Mail plays nice with Gmail. Ødegaard reveals that Opera Software focused on scenarios involving specifically the integration of Gmail IMAP accounts into Opera 11.10’s email client.

Here are some of the enhancements enumerated by Ødegaard, which should make the life of Gmail users easier when leveraging Opera Mail:

“• Opera now recognizes the special IMAP folders 'Sent items', Spam', 'Trash', and treats them as equivalents of the native Sent, Spam and Trash views in Opera Mail.

•Opera now recognizes the special way in which Gmail duplicates messages that appear in the 'All Mail' IMAP folder and the various folders created by Gmail's own 'labels' (including Inbox).

•Opera Mail will then make sure that messages don't show up twice in its Unread and Recieved views. As for other views like Mailing lists, Contacts, Labels and Attachments, duplication can still occur there. You can improve on this for now by unchecking 'Show hidden' for such views.”
