At over a month since the release to web of version 10.0 of its proprietary browser, Opera Software is already offering the Beta Build of the next iteration of Opera, pushed to v10.10. Promising that end users have never experienced the Web the way that they will with Opera 10.10 Beta, the Norway-based browser maker has revealed that the release integrates the Beta Build of Opera Unite. Designed to redefine the now traditional client-server computing model of the Web, opera Unite is a technology included in Opera 10.10 capable of transforming client computers into servers, in order to streamline content sharing and serving scenarios directly to additional client machines across the Internet.

It is critical to note that Opera Software has positioned Opera Unite not just as a feature extending the Opera browser, but also as a platform. In this regard, the browser maker is inviting developers to start building applications designed to integrate with Opera Unite and Opera 10.10. According to Opera Software, devs will find that they require the same knowledge and skills as when coding webpages, and that they can make use of the same tools, including web standards such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

“We invite developers all over the world to use their creativity and imagination to push the boundaries of what is possible with Opera Unite,” noted Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera. “We are moving closer to our goal of reinventing the Web and are excited to see Opera Unite continue to evolve in powerful and compelling ways.” Opera Unite was unveiled initially in mid-June 2009, when Opera Software embarked on a new path to reinvent the web.

By default, Opera 10.10 Beta with Opera Unite Beta brings to the table a variety of applications, set up to act as illustrative examples to developers as to what the new platform can allow them to do. “Opera 10.10 beta includes the following Opera Unite applications for you to try: Photo Sharing - Create instant Web photo galleries from your PC. Messenger - Chat live with your friends in My Opera. File Sharing - Share a file from your personal computer without having to upload it. Web Server - Turn your Opera browser into an instant Web server that hosts your Web sites directly from your computer. Media Player - Stream your entire music catalog from anywhere, instantly, using any Web browser. Fridge - Post a note on your friends’ virtual refrigerators,” von Tetzchner added.
