The 4.46 firmware update for the PlayStation 3 is now officially launched, available for all users of the home console and the company is also giving those who have bricked their consoles last week a way to use them again.

Gamers will have to use a web browser to manually download 4.46 onto a USB drive and will then have to boot up their device in Safe Mode.

This will allow them to get the file and update the entire system manually, restoring full functionality, including XMB use, to the PlayStation 3.

Sony is offering a step-by-step guide for everyone in its support center.

Those who were not affected by firmware 4.45 will be able to get the new update when prompted by their system.

Sony has not offered official details on all the changes included in 4.46.
