A brand new optional firmware update for the PS3 is now available for download, taking the console's system software up to version 4.53 and adding support for closed captions on Blu-ray discs and videos.

The PS3 has recently seen its successor, the PS4, debut in many areas of the world to great success, and it seems that all focus will soon shift to the next-gen device.

Even so, Sony has decided to unleash a brand new firmware update for the current-gen home console, taking its system software to version 4.53.

According to the official website, the new firmware brings support for the closed captions function while playing Blu-ray discs and videos.

No other details are available, but it seems that the update is an optional one, as not installing it won't stop you from accessing the PlayStation Network.

You can download PS3 firmware 4.53 right now from Softpedia or from the PSN online service.
