The new system software adds a Calendar application and brings many other changes

Sony has confirmed that it's just rolled out a brand new system software update for the PlayStation Vita handheld console, bringing a suite of major improvements to different features and applications, from the home screen, to the messaging and parental controls.

The PlayStation Vita has experienced a boost in terms of sales and popularity ever since the PS4 was released last November, as plenty of different owners of Sony's new home console saw the benefit of having the portable device, thanks to features like Remote Play.

Now, Sony has confirmed that a fresh firmware update is available for download for the PS Vita, taking its system software up to version 3.10.

The new firmware brings plenty of different improvements to core features and applications, starting with the home screen, which can now display over 500 icons and 100 apps.

The Messages system has also been augmented, as it can now support the recording and playback of voice messages between the PS Vita and the PS4.

The new firmware also brings great news for parents who let their children play on the PS Vita, as the Parental Controls system has been improved greatly.

"We have enhanced the parental control features. You will be able to restrict PS Store access, and with a children’s age guide for each level it is easier to find the right level for your children. We’ve also added an information guide for TrendMicro web security," Sony said on its PS blog.

A new Calendar application has been added to the console, through which players can create gameplay events and sync them automatically with Google Calendar. You can also share events via the Messages or Email apps.

The content manager system has also received some extra features, as Vita owners can select the new Manage Content on Memory Card option to check and manage the usage of their card.

A few other enhancements have also been added, so check out the small list below.

- Music – You will now be able to search for content saved on a connected device such as a PC. - Video – You’ll be able to now sort content by size. Photo - Rotate Screen Automatically has been added to Photos to control tilt sensor for rotation of images. - Freeform has been added to the Panoramic mode selection list. Settings - Adjust Daylight Saving Automatically has been added. - 30 minutes has been added in Enter Standby Mode Automatically.

The new PS Vita firmware update 3.10 is now available for download via the PlayStation Network worldwide.
