Test versions of upcoming editions of Symantec security solutions are currently available for download. Early adopters now have the chance to grab Norton AntiVirus 2011 Beta and Norton Internet Security 2011 Beta and test-drive the next iteration of the Norton product lineup. Users are advised that both the Norton AntiVirus 2011 and Norton Internet Security 2011 are in pre-release stage and development continues, with Symantec inviting testers to contribute their feedback. Customers not willing to take the risks associated with running Beta software should stick with their current security solution.

According to Symantec’s Abhay Kulkarni, Norton AntiVirus 2011 Beta and Norton Internet Security 2011 Beta bring to the table a variety of improvements in terms of new features and capabilities. The security outfit has also labored to enhance Reputation Scan, Download Insight, the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool, and Performance Alerts, while introducing Norton Safe Web for Facebook and Norton Power Eraser.

“This is really a short summary of some of the key new features in 2011. There are several other changes to enhance the usability, quality, performance, and lastly--but most importantly,--protection. Give the Beta a try and let us know what you think. We will have our eyes and ears open for your feedback,” Kulkarni stated.

According to Dong Chung, also from Symantec, the security company continues to be focused on boosting performance for its products. Work has been done to ensure that Norton 2011 delivers effectiveness and accuracy at full speed with a minimal impact on system resources. Chung revealed that Norton 2011 performance improvements included: faster real-time operations, faster startup, better resource usage during system idle, faster shutdown, and expanded memory metrics.

“The performance improvements of Norton 2011 touch on everyday tasks performed on your computer and greatly improve efficiencies at any environment – home or office. The improvements are the result of us working together toward one goal--building the fastest security products--and the great feedback from our valued customers. We would like to hear how Norton 2011 Beta works for you and welcome any suggestions even for further performance improvements. Please also keep in mind that we are still working on other key ideas to provide the fastest real-time protection product,” Chung explained.

Kulkarni provided a few highlights of Norton’s evolution with the 2011 product lineup:

“- Reputation Scan: With 2011, we are enhancing this even more by providing fine-grained reputation information about files and by allowing users to perform a Reputation Scan of their files. - Norton Safe Web for Facebook: This feature lets users scan their feed for malicious URLs using Norton Safe Web. You get a report of the scan, which you can choose to share on your Facebook Wall. - Download Insight: In 2011, we have expanded the number and types of applications that will be monitored by Download Insight. In addition to Internet Explorer and Firefox, the list of supported applications includes browsers like Chrome, Opera, and Safari; instant messengers like Yahoo Messenger, AOL Messenger, and MSN Messenger; email clients such as Outlook and Outlook Express; download managers and FTP clients like Filezilla; and P2P clients like Bittorrent and Limewire. - Norton Rescue Tools are a set of tools that help you recover a badly infected computer. In addition to the familiar Norton Bootable Recovery Tool, this year we are introducing Norton Power Eraser. - Performance Alerts: In 2011, we have taken it one step further by adding real time proactive Performance Alerts. We measure the four broad metrics of performance: CPU usage, memory usage, disk IO, and handle counts.”
