Windows XP SP3 RTM Build 5512 was made available for download at the end of April 2008, and five months later, Microsoft is releasing a new wave of the third and final service pack for XP. However, while the initial release of SP3 was designed to integrate with the 32-bit versions of the desktop client, the October refresh is meant for implementation with Windows Embedded for Point of Service and Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs. But make no mistake about it, the latest wave of XP SP3 brings nothing more than the original Service Pack 3 bits for the XP client, but tailored to \WEPOS and WinFLP.

“This SP3 update includes all previously released Windows XP security updates, hotfixes, and select out-of-band releases that are applicable to systems running the WEPOS and WinFLP operating systems,” Microsoft revealed. “This SP3 Update for WEPOS and WinFLP can take up to 750MB of disk space; this includes the installation files, and backup files to support uninstalling the update. When installing this Service Pack update from the web, a folder is created in your Windows directory called ServicePackFiles. This folder is 375MB in size for this SP3 update for WEPOS and WinFLP.”

The Redmond giant revealed that the installation folders for both the WEPOS and WinFLP take up approximately 300 MB. In the context in which the system drive would not offer sufficient space for the deployment of SP3, Microsoft indicated that the installation can be performed via a USB flash drive. Just the WindowsXP-KB958255-ENU.exe download package weighs in at 183.1 MB.

Windows Embedded for Point of Service is of course an embedded operating system designed for scenarios involving a central point-of-service system, from ATMs to kiosks and fuel pumps. Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs is intimately connected with the company's Software Assurance for Volume Licensing, and is set up to prolong the lifetime of legacy hardware.
