Transmission 1.80 Beta 1 is now available for free download for users of Mac OS X. A BitTorrent client similar to Vuze, Transmission’s code is licensed under the GNU General Public License, with select code licensed under the liberal MIT License. The program boasts a simple, intuitive interface designed to integrate tightly with any OS. Transmission is a Universal Binary, suitable for both Intel and PowerPC Macs.

Listing changes for all platforms, as well as Mac-specific tweaks and enhancements, the developers in charge with maintaining Transmission neat and clean claim to have added support for magnet links, trackerless torrents, IPv6 (improved) and IPv6 for the DHT, PEX (improved), as well as the following enhancements:

- if a torrent has multiple tracker tiers, announce to them in parallel; - add optional "incomplete directory" where partial downloads are stored; - append .part to incomplete files; - faster management of very large peer lists; - when seeding, prefetch the data we upload; - improved DHT bootstrapping; - brand-new torrents with no downloaded data don't have to wait in the "Verify Local Data" queue.

Mac-specific changes include the addition of a redesigned trackers inspector tab with favicons and copy-paste functionality, the release notes reveal. Users can now paste lists of multiple trackers, while the message log stores all messages and does real filtering. Quick Look is restored on Snow Leopard, as is the reveal-in-Finder functionality. Additionally, moving data and the incomplete folder are now handled by libtransmission. Smallr behavior and interface tweaks are also incorporated in this early beta version of Transmission 1.80.

Transmission is free to download and use on any machine running Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later. The latest releases, including Tiger and Panther-supported versions of Transmission, can be obtained using the download link below. The BitTorrent client is now 64-bit compatible as well, allowing it to run on Snow Leopard in 64-bit mode.
