Build 3419

The latest development snapshot of Opera 10.60 comes with support for Google’s open web media project, WebM. Build 3419 was launched just days after a previous testing release that was focused mainly on fixing a range of bugs, and almost a month after Opera Software introduced the first Build of its browser designed to play nice with WebM, coinciding with the introduction of the project. Opera 10.60 Build 3419 can be used to play HTML5 video using Google’s VP8 codec, which is being positioned as a royalty-free and open source alternative to H.264 and Ogg Theora.

“The web is moving quickly these days, and Opera would like to stay at the forefront of open web standards. In this build we have added four features related to HTML5 and other open standards, and an update for a previous implementation,” a member of the Opera Desktop team revealed.

The Norway-based browser vendor even produced a few links pointing testers to the resources necessary to test-drive the new features brought to the table with the advent of Opera 10.60 Build 3419. In this sense, early adopters can test-drive WebM support for HTML5 video, but also additional features, including HTML5 Offline Web Applications (demo), Geolocation (demo), Web Workers (demo) and a major update for Cross-Document Messaging (demo). Users should keep in mind that Opera 10.60 Build 3419 is still in Beta stage, and as such unfit for deployment in production environments.

“We have also added sets of specific fonts to be used for CJK web sites, which should improve readability. We would appreciate your feedback on this. In addition to these new/improved features there are quite a few bug fixes for Linux/FreeBSD. Mac users will notice that plug-ins will generally perform better too,” the Opera Desktop team representative added
