14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft has worked up a minor update for Office for Mac 2008 users, addressing the stability and security of the software. Available as a free download for existing Office customers, Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 Version 12.2.8 is a hefty 350 MB download.
According to the people responsible for the Windows operating system, “This update improves stability."
“In addition, it includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code,” Microsoft states.
Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 Version 12.2.8 applies to Office 2008, Office 2008 Home and Student Edition, Office 2008 Special Media Edition, Word 2008, Excel 2008, PowerPoint 2008, Entourage 2008, Office 2008 for Mac Business Edition.
System requirements include Mac OS X version 10.4.9 (Tiger) or later, and Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1 (12.1.0).
Microsoft advises customers to verify that their computer meets the minimum requirements before proceeding to install Office 2008 for Mac and its subsequent updates, by using About this Mac in the Apple Menu.
To properly install this update, customers must follow these steps:
1. Double-click the downloaded DMG file to mount the Office for Mac volume on your desktop, and then double-click the Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.8 Update volume to open it (Safari users may have had this step carried out for them automatically).
2. In the Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.8 Update volume window, double-click the Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.8 Update application to start the update process, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
3. After the installation is finished, you can remove the update installer from your desktop (hard drive) by dragging the Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.8 Update volume to the Trash, and then dragging the DMG file that you downloaded to the Trash.
“To verify that you have installed this update, you can open any Microsoft Office 2008 application to check the version number,” Microsoft adds.
“For example, open Word, and then on the Word menu, click About Word. In the dialog box, compare the version number next to Latest Installed Update.”
