Next to iOS 4.3.3 and iOS 4.2.8, Apple’s Support Downloads section is showing availability of several new software updates targeting Mac users. A new Mac OS X 10.6.7 release is now available specifically for owners of the newest iMac models.

According to the release notes, “the Mac OS X 10.6.7 Update for iMac is recommended for all early 2011 iMac models.”

Apple says “It includes general operating system fixes for Mac OS X Snow Leopard that enhance the stability, compatibility, performance, and security of your Mac.”

Among others, the update is specifically asked with improving the reliability of Back to My Mac, the Mac-specific feature that uses Wide-Area Bonjour to securely discover services across the Internet and automatically configure ad hoc, on-demand, point-to-point encrypted connections between computers using IPSec.

Issues when transferring files to certain SMB servers should be resolved, as should various minor Mac App Store bugs and some minor FaceTime performance issues. Apple doesn’t specify which ones exactly.

10.6.7 for Early 2011 iMacs also address issues with graphics stability and 3D performance, improves external display compatibility, and improves Thunderbolt device support, according to the changelog.

These changes have long been applied to systems already available on the market via similar Mac-specific updates released by Apple.

The Snow Leopard update includes all the improvements in the previous Mac OS X v10.6.1, 10.6.2, 10.6.3, 10.6.4, 10.6.5, and 10.6.6 updates, such as Safari 5.0.4, RAW image compatibility for multiple digital cameras, other Mac-specific tweaks and fixes, as well as the latest security patches.

Weighing in at 382.56 MB, the update is incremental, meaning users need to have Mac OS X 10.6.7 already installed and running on their new iMac.

It’s a free download from Apple’s Downloads area or from Softpedia via the link below.
