Logitech, the company behind some of the world’s best computer peripherals, has released the newest version of its Logitech Control Center, a software package that allows you to program your
keyboard and/or mouse buttons to perform different functions and to take full advantage of your Logitech keyboard, mouse, or trackball.
According to the company, the LCC and your Logitech keyboard allow you to browse the Internet using dedicated keys that provide one-touch access to your favorite sites, launch your email application by pressing a button, or play music and control the system speaker using built-in buttons. Additionally, Logitech keyboards also allow users to program keys and quickly open documents, folders, applications, and other frequently used items. Other key features include:
- Scroll in windows of applications built for MacOS X (you can scroll up and down with a single keystroke or wheel movement);
- Switch between open applications;
- Show contextual menus with a single mouse click;
- Simulate keystrokes to provide shortcuts to commands you use regularly. With the release of Logitech Control Center 3.0 for Mac OS X, the company has added support for new mice and keyboards; the Logitech Unifying software to pair up to six compatible wireless mice, keyboards and number pads with one single Logitech Unifying receiver; an enhanced Zoom feature to enable toggling the mouse’s scroll wheel between scroll and zoom modes by pressing a button and various minor bug fixes.
The 17.3 MB download file is a Universal Binary and supports English, French, German, Italian, Dutch and Spanish, Logitech says, while the software requires Mac OS X OS 10.4.x (Tiger) or 10.5.x (Leopard) and a Logitech USB pointing device or keyboard. The
release notes do not mention whether Logitech has optimized the Control Center tool for Apple’s latest version of Leopard,
Mac OS X 10.5.8.
