Apple’s Support / Downloads section is featuring new updates for users of its just-released Mac OS X version 10.6, Snow Leopard. Network Registration Update 1.0 is one of those updates. The download is recommended for servers running Mac OS X Server 10.6, as it addresses an issue with duplicate serial number alerts when dealing with multiple network interfaces.

At first glance, Apple says little about Network Registration Update 1.0, mentioning only that, “The Network Registration Update is recommended for servers running Mac OS X Server version 10.6. It addresses an issue with duplicate serial number alerts on servers with multiple network interfaces.”

However, an additional Support piece titled “Mac OS X Server v10.6, Xsan: Invalid serial number alert with multiple network interfaces” reveals even more about the update.

“Server Assistant, Server Admin, or Xsan Admin may report a duplicate serial number in use on a server with multiple network interfaces in Mac OS X Server v10.6,” Apple begins to explain in detail. “This may include servers which provide services to multiple subnets for DHCP, NetBoot or Gateway (NAT), servers which are Xsan controllers or clients, servers with a bonded ethernet port, and servers using third-party virtualization software,” the company says.

To solve this, Apple adds, users must download and install Network Registration Update 1.0. Available both as an automatic Software Update and as a manual download, the update is free for servers running Mac OS X Server 10.6.

“If you encounter this alert in Sever Assistant, disconnect all but one of the network interfaces, then enter your Server serial number. After completing setup, install Network Registration Update 1.0, then configure the additional interfaces,” the document also reveals.
