After a few months’ work, Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 is finally here. The first major update to the 3.0 line brings several new features and general improvements. Notable are the new Quick Filter toolbar and faster message indexing, as well as a new migration assistant for Thunderbird 2.0 users and several other usability updates. Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 is the same build as the second release candidate, which was found stable enough for release. There are still a few known issues.

“Mozilla Messaging is proud to announce that Thunderbird 3.1 is now available for download. Thunderbird 3.1, based on the Gecko 1.9.2 platform, was built by a community of passionate contributors, experienced developers, security experts, localization and support communities, and thousands of active testers,” Mozilla announced.

Here’s a quick list of what’s new in Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1:

- Faster Search Results; - Quick Filter Toolbar; - New Migration Assistant; - Saved Files Manager; - Mail Account Setup Wizard; - Improvements to Stability, Memory, and Password Handling.

Thunderbird 3.1 makes it easier to sift through your email. On the one hand, searching is faster and indexing all the emails has also gotten a speed bump. On the other hand, there’s a new Quick Filter Toolbar, which provides several options for narrowing down the search queries.

Users still stuck with Mozilla Thunderbird 2 will appreciate the fresh Migration Assistant that enables them to keep their settings while making the switch to Thunderbird 3.1. The Mail Account Setup Wizard has a larger database of known email providers so in most cases, all you’ll need to setup an account is the account information. Finally, there’s a saved file manager to keep track of files from attachments you’ve downloaded with Thunderbird.
