Mozilla has released the latest update to its email client and feed reader, Thunderbird 3.1.2. The release is a bug-fixing update which resolves several issues remaining from Thunderbrid 3.1.1. It’s the second small stability patch since the major Thunderbird 3.1 release.

“Thunderbird 3.1.2 is now available as a free download for Windows, Mac, and Linux from www.GetThunderbird.com. We recommend that users keep up to date with the latest stability and support versions of Thunderbird, and encourage all our users to upgrade to this very latest version,” Mozilla announced.

“If you already have Thunderbird, you will receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. This update can also be applied manually by selecting ‘Check for Updates…’ from the Help menu. This releases fixes some stability issues and several user experience concerns,” the announcement added.

Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.2 fixes a few issues, but doesn’t come with any new feature or major changes. In some cases, indexing stopped working altogether with Thunderbird 3.1, though it worked fine with Thunderbird 3.0.x. This issue has now been fixed. Another issue that has been solved prevented users from choosing ‘normal password’ as an authentication method. Overall, the bugs fixed were rather minor.

Thunderbird 3.1 fixed some of the lingering issues in the initial Thunderbird 3 release which prevented users from migrating from previous versions. Along with a new migration assistant, the switch from Thunderbird 2 should go much smoother in the latest releases. As such, Mozilla strongly encourages all users of older versions to move to the most recent release.
