An updated version of the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac is now available for download from Microsoft. The Redmond company is offering the utility for Mac users to streamline the bridging of Apple machines and Windows computers. In certain scenarios users of both Mac and Windows computers will need to access the Windows platform and associated applications and content via their Mac. This is where the Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac comes in. Now up to version 2.0.1, the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac can be grabbed for free straight from the software giant.

“Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.0.1 lets you connect from your Macintosh computer to a Windows-based computer or to multiple Windows-based computers at the same time. After you have connected, you can work with applications and files on the Windows-based computer,” Microsoft explained.

Users who currently leverage the Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac will need to upgrade to the latest version of the release in order to ensure that they are safe against potential attacks leveraging a security hole in previous versions of the tool. “This update improves security. It includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code,” the company informed.

The client is designed to play nice with the following operating system versions: Mac OS X 10.4.9 (Tiger) or a later, according to the Redmond company. At the same time, only certain versions of the Windows platform are supported. As of version 2.0.1, support for Windows 7 was not yet introduced, an understandable move considering that, although the latest iteration of the Windows client was released to manufacturing on July 22nd, 2009, it won't be available to consumers until October 22nd of this year.

“To connect to a Windows-based computer, you must have network access and permissions to connect to a Windows-based computer that is running Terminal Services or Remote Desktop Services. These services are included with the following Windows products: Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Media Center, Windows Server 2008 Datacenter, Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, Windows Server 2008 Standard, Windows Server 2003 Datacenter, Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, Windows Server 2003 Standard,” Microsoft noted.
