With the delivery of the Microsoft Product Support Reports, the Redmond company has expanded the Microsoft Fix it family with a new solution designed to streamline the data collecting process from computers plagued by problems. According to the software giant, MPSReports can harvest information related to Windows, Exchange, and SQL Server, and make it available for troubleshooting. The tool can gather data not only from the local computer but also from additional machines provided that the special components for Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are in place.

“MPSReports helps Support Professionals and ITPros automatically gather critical system and logging information that is used in troubleshooting support issues. Built upon the success of earlier versions of MPSReports, this new release adds support for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, collects more than 500 datapoints, and features an extensibility mode for Support Professionals to create and provide additional diagnostics coverage to their customers,” revealed William Keener, program manager, Microsoft Product Quality & Online.

At this point in time, MPSReports is designed to play nice with Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Server 2008. The extra components that the tool requires involve: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 for XP, Windows Powershell 1.0 - for XP, Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008; Windows Installer 3.1 for XP, and Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0 for XP and Windows Server 2003.

After all required components are installed, MPSReports will offer IT professionals a variety of diagnostic options they can run. For example, diagnostics can be performed for Internet and Networking, for Servers or for Business Networks. The tool is also capable of collecting general information related to a specific system. Once the data is collected, MPSReports will enable users to either compress and attach the results to an email, save the information locally, or open and view it on the spot.
