Redmond, Washington-based software titan Microsoft has released Office for Mac 2011 version 14.4.3, a free software update for users of the productivity suite for Macs that competes directly with Apple’s own iWork. The new release focuses on addressing issues in Outlook.

As usual, the official announcement is posted on the company’s Support center and says, “Microsoft has released the Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 14.4.3 Update.”

The Redmond software giant adds, “In addition to the application improvements that are mentioned in this article, Office for Mac 2011 is now available as a subscription offering.”

No other components except Outlook for Mac 2011 are touched by the update. Microsoft has addressed an issue that caused the email client to fail to automatically detect and connect to the settings for the Exchange server. Outlook for Mac would prompt the user to punch in the settings manually when he / she used certain proxy auto-configurations.

An issue that caused Outlook for Mac to delete shared folders is addressed. This happened when shared folders were added by using the Open Other User's Folder feature in tandem with certain errors occurring on the server.

Finally, the update further fixes an issue that caused Outlook for Mac to continuously try to connect to public folders that were disabled or removed by the administrator from the Exchange server.

“Before you install the Office for Mac 2011 14.4.3 update, make sure that you have Office for Mac 2011 14.1.0 or a later version installed on your computer,” the Windows maker notes.

“Also, make sure that the computer is running Mac OS X v10.5.8 or a later version of the Mac OS X operating system. To verify that the computer meets this prerequisite, click About This Mac on the Apple menu,” Microsoft says.

To make sure that Office for Mac 2011 14.1.0 is installed on your Mac, select Finder, click Go in the menubar, then click Applications. Open the Microsoft Office 2011 folder and launch any of the Office applications you have installed, then on the application menu click About. In the About dialog box you should be able to see the version number for your current installation.

Office for Mac 14.4.3 is available from Microsoft AutoUpdate or as a manual download from the company’s Support center, and of course from good old Softpedia (link below).

“Microsoft scanned this file for viruses,” the Redmond company adds. “Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.”

Make sure you meet the system requirements before you proceed with the installation.
