Microsoft has rolled out the latest version of its Messenger for Mac application, bringing real-time collaboration between people in different locations.

“Talk instantly with Microsoft Messenger for Mac 8,” reads the company’s marketing material for the newest version of the software.

“Mac users can communicate or collaborate on the fly, sharing instant messages, presence information, or files across time zones and locales. You can even make audio or video calls with contacts on the Mac or on Windows,” Microsoft explains.

According to the release notes for version 8.0.1, the latest Microsoft Messenger for Mac provides real-time collaboration between people in different locations.

Users can now employ instant messaging and audio and video calls to communicate with their contacts.

Specifically, Microsoft Messenger for Mac  8.0.1 introduces a highly anticipated audio/video feature for personal users with a Windows Live account.

“You can now use your personal account for face-to-face interactions with family, friends, and coworkers by using Messenger for Mac or Windows Live Messenger,” according to the official release notes for the new version.

Weighing in at 25MB, the Microsoft Messenger 8.0.1 DMG can be immediately obtained via the link below. Installing it will require roughly 85MB of free hard disk space.

Users can sign in to Messenger for Mac 8.0.1 by using a Windows Live ID. For reference, Windows Live IDs include all e-mail accounts ending in "@live.com", "@hotmail.com", "@msn.com" and other accounts registered with Windows Live.

The Microsoft Messenger chat client allows users to connect not only to the MSN network, but various other messaging services.

Using it, you can talk to your friends on Yahoo Messenger, as well as with your Apple iChat buddies who are signed in with AOL accounts.

With Microsoft Messenger, Mac users also have access to common tasks and functions directly from the Dock. These include signing out, changing their status, transferring files, going directly to the MSN Home Page and Hotmail Inbox, and viewing their contact list.
