While VLC for Windows 8 is still in the works right now, the search for the best multimedia player designed for Microsoft’s latest operating system continues.

Metro Media Player is an interesting project that supports most popular video and audio formats, but MKV compatibility is not available for the time being.

In addition, the app can deal with SRT subtitle files, while also offering PlayTo DLNA support to stream content from a standalone device to a TV.

While it allows users to access its features with a keyboard and a mouse, Metro Media Player is completely optimized for the touch, so you can install and use it on your Windows RT tablet just fine.

The good news is that all these features are available at absolutely no cost, so you won’t have to pay for a license.
