Owners of any late 2012 Macintosh computer are instructed to download and install the new “Mac Wi-Fi Update 1.0,” according to a technical note on Apple’s Support site.

Apple has released a handful of updates for late 2012 Mac systems, including one Mac Wi-Fi Update 1.0 which improves compatibility when using the 5GHz band in Wi-Fi, Apple says.

The update is recommended for all users of a new-generation Macintosh computer.

Users will need to check the Boot ROM or SMC to confirm that the update has been applied. Customers can do so by checking the CFBundleVersion string of the AirPortBrcm4311.kext.

Apple also mentions that a new driver is delivered in this update: “AirPortBrcm4331.kext CFBundleVersion = 612.20.15,” supplying a Finder path for those who want to locate the file on their hard drive (below):

/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcm4331.kext/Contents/Info.plist

Weighing in at 1.49 MB, Mac Wi-Fi Update 1.0 requires OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, specifically build version 12C2034.
