Apple has released Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 Update v.1.1 in both simple and combo form. It includes improvements to the AFP Server, AFP Client, Managed Client, Server Admin, System Image Utility, and more. The update also comprises the enhancements delivered with the Mac OS X Server version 10.5.1, 10.5.2, 10.5.3, 10.5.4, 10.5.5, 10.5.6, and 10.5.7 updates.

According to Apple, Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 is recommended for all servers currently running Leopard Server. Version 1.1 of the update includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes for:

- reliability of AFP for file services and Time Machine backups; - propagating file system permissions; - maintaining history of users' previous passwords; - ensuring consistent VPN throughput regardless of load; - Spotlight indexing and memory consumption; - resolves duplicate serial number alert for servers with multiple network interfaces.

Leopard Server users should note that there are two separate standalone installers. The Mac OS X Server v10.5.8 Update is aimed at systems currently running Mac OS X Server version 10.5.7. The Mac OS X Server v10.5.8 Combo Update can be installed on earlier versions of Mac OS X Server, including 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2, 10.5.3, 10.5.4, 10.5.5, 10.5.6, but also 10.5.7.

Besides the aforementioned changes, additional improvements are for Mac OS X Server security. Posted on August 12, 2009, Security Update 2009-004 is the latest security patch from Apple. Weighing in at a hefty 166MB, the download is available for users of Mac OS X v10.4.11, Mac OS X Server v10.4.11, Mac OS X v10.5.8, and Mac OS X Server v10.5.8. The Mac maker described the update saying that, “Security Update 2009-004 is recommended for all users and improves the security of Mac OS X.” Mac OS X Server v10.5.8 also includes all the other improvements delivered in the client Mac OS X 10.5.8 Update.
