It's not Christmas yet, but Linus "Santa" Torvalds came down the chimney and announced that the fifth Release Candidate of the upcoming Linux kernel 3.13 is now available for download and testing, for all you good Linux geeks out there.

In numbers, Linux kernel 3.13 RC5 contains about 40% of updated drivers (networking, sound, GPU, etc.), 15% of architecture updates (PowerPC, etc.), 10% of filesystems improvements (Ceph, CIFS, etc.), other 10% of documentation updates, and the rest are miscelanous fixes, including mm (numa) and core kernel (scheduler).

"Ho ho ho, Christmas is almost upon us, and -rc5 is the last rc before most of us gorge ourselves into insensibility. Or cry into our lonely beers. Or go out for Chinese food. Or whatever you happen to do."

"Things seem to be slowly calming down, and I expect that the next week is going to be calmer yet, for all the obvious reasons. This might also be a good time to say that even _if_ things continue to calm down, I think we'll be going to at least -rc8 regardless, since LCA is fairly early this year, and I won't be opening the merge window for 3.14 until after I'm back from those travels," said Linus Torvalds in the official release announcement. Download Linux kernel 3.13 RC5 right now from Softpedia. Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
