Kaspersky has launched a new Mac security product exclusively for Mac users called Kaspersky Virus Scanner. It’s a limited antivirus solution, but it’s also rather cheap and the developers say it’s not going to take its toll on the system resources. Interested? Read on.

Virus Scanner is a Mac App Store exclusive, which means it targets OS X 10.6.6 (Snow Leopard) or later. It also works with OS X 10.7 Lion and is designed as a "lightweight" version of the company's more powerful Anti-Virus for Mac 2011, which also runs scheduled tasks.

Virus Scanner does simple things like detect and remove both Mac- and non-Mac malware, and uses automatically updated definitions to do so. Scans can only be run manually.

“Kaspersky Antivirus Scanner is designed to protect Mac users against all types of malware. When scanning it will detect and when possible remove both Mac and non-Mac viruses using an automatically updated malware database to ensure you are protected against the latest threats,” says the company behind some of the best security solutions out there.

“When not scanning for viruses, it will use no Mac CPU processing power ensuring maximum performance for your daily tasks. As you would expect form Kaspersky it’s very simple to use, choose to scan your Mac when it’s convenient for you,” the company says.

There’s another couple of downsides to using the 10 dollar app, as opposed to the more expensive Anti-Virus for Mac - Virus Scanner won't get definition updates as quickly, and you don’t get access to Kaspersky Security Network cloud features.

The key features listed by Kaspersky include:

• Automatic malware database Updates • Protects against Mac and non-Mac threats • Scan when it’s convenient for you • Only uses CPU resources when scanning
