Internet Information Services Media Services 3.0 is currently available for download from Microsoft. The 3.0 release, which was delivered at the end of the past week, comes to the table with support for the latest iteration of the Widows client and server operating systems, namely Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The integrated HTTP-based media delivery platform has been up for grabs from the Microsoft Download Center since October 9th, 2009. Microsoft has positioned IIS Media Services 3.0 as a collection of media-related extensions designed to integrate seamlessly with version 7.0 of the Internet Information Services (IIS).

“IIS Media Services provides an integrated HTTP-based media delivery platform, and includes: • Smooth Streaming, adaptive streaming of media over HTTP • Live Smooth Streaming, for live adaptive streaming of broadcast events • Bit Rate Throttling, meters the speed that media is delivered to a player • Web Playlists, secure sequencing of media content You can also download two additional IIS extensions related to IIS Media Services 3.0.: • Advanced Logging, with real-time client- and server-side logging • Application Request Routing (ARR), providing HTTP proxying and caching,” Microsoft revealed.

According to the Redmond company, IIS Media Services 3.0 supports not only Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, but also Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and SP2. In addition to a supported operating system, customers must also be running IIS7 as well as have installed the IIS Management Console for Internet Information Services 7.

“The following prerequisites must be fulfilled to run the IIS Media Services 3.0 installation package and install IIS Media Services 3.0: • You must use IIS 7, running on Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista® with Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows 7. • The IIS Management Console for Internet Information Services 7.0 must be installed to manage the IIS Media Services 3.0 modules using the IIS 7 user interface. • Previous versions of the IIS Media Services extensions must be uninstalled before installation of IIS Media Services 3.0,” the company added.
