IT administrators managing environments which include Internet Explorer 9 RTW, can grab some resources available from Microsoft to streamline the work involving Group Policy.
The Redmond company is offering
Group Policy Settings Reference Windows Internet Explorer 9 and
Administrative Templates for Windows Internet Explorer 9 via the Download Center, both free downloads.
IE9 was released to web on March 15th, 2011 one year after the first Platform Preview downloads went live at MIX 2010.
The Group Policy resources were offered soon after the official RTW deadline and are bound to come in handy to IT professionals, although the browser has yet to prove itself when it comes down to adoption in enterprise environments.
The Group Policy Settings Reference for IE9 is a spreadsheet set up to list “the policy settings for computer and user configurations included in the administrative template files (admx/adml) delivered with Windows Internet Explorer 9,” Microsoft explained.
“The policy settings included in this spreadsheet cover Internet Explorer 5, Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 9. These files are used to expose policy settings when you edit Group Policy objects (GPOs) using Group Policy Object Editor (also known as GPEdit).”
The software giant is offering the IE9 Administrative Templates for those IT admins running Windows releases preceding Windows Vista SP2.
“Administrative Template files are used to populate user interface settings in the Group Policy Object Editor, enabling administrators to manage registry-based policy settings,” the company stated.
Business customers running Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, do not need the Administrative Templates, since they’re included by default with IE9 RTW. The same cannot be said for Windows Server 2003.
“For Windows Server 2003, the Administrative Template files need to be manually imported, as Internet Explorer 9 installation is not supported on that Operating System. An IT Admin may want to manage Group Policy settings on a mixed environment of Internet Explorer 9 and earlier versions from a Windows Server 2003 machine,” Microsoft explained.
