Rockstar Games have launched the 10 year anniversary version of Grand Theft Auto III, the highly acclaimed and highly controversial sandbox action game originally released in 2001.

“Welcome to Liberty City. Where it all began,” reads the iTunes Preview description. “Rockstar Games celebrates the 10th anniversary of one of the most influential games of all time. The critically acclaimed blockbuster Grand Theft Auto III comes to mobile devices, bringing to life the dark and seedy underworld of Liberty City.”

According to the highly-acclaimed development studio behind the popular GTA franchise, the iOS game has everything the PC version did, and then some, including “a massive and diverse open world, a wild cast of characters from every walk of life and the freedom to explore at will.”

“With stellar voice acting, a darkly comic storyline, a stunning soundtrack and revolutionary open-world gameplay, Grand Theft Auto III is the game that defined the open world genre for a generation,” Rockstar adds.

The universal app is good for both iPhone and iPad players, meaning you only have to download one app for both devices. The game is supported on iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 4, iPad 1 and iPad 2. The game requires iOS 4.3 or later.

The developers say the graphics have been updated. The characters and vehicle models are also tweaked, and Retina display devices will output the game at HD quality resolution, as will the iPad.

The gameplay has been optimized for touch screen devices and you get custom controls.

According to the iTunes description, you must be at least 17 years old to download and play Grand Theft Auto III.

Weighing in at 462 MB, Grand Theft Auto III iOS requires either a WiFi connection or a computer to download from the App Store. The game sells for $4.99 / 3.99 Euros.
