Dev channel push halted due to crashes

Google has made available for download a new Build of the most advanced variant of its open source browser, save for the Chromium milestones. Google Chrome 6.0.437.1 is now available for download through the Dev Channel for Windows and Linux users, while testers running Mac OS X will be able to update Chrome 6.0 all the way to version 6.0.437.2. However, it seems that the Mountain View-based search giant has stumbled upon some issues with the Dev flavor of Chrome.

Details are scarce at this point in time, but it appears that Google is working to find the cause of a number of crashes reported by early adopters with the most advanced version of Chrome. Of course, the Mountain View company is bound to get the development and testing process right back on track as soon as it will identify and resolve the source of the problems. Still, for the time being, Anthony Laforge from the Google Chrome team informed that, “We've temporarily stopped the Dev channel push while we investigate some crashes.”

Laforge enumerated some of the changes in Google Chrome 6.0.437.1 Dev impacting the browser flavors on all supported platforms, including “Detach Reload from omnibox, combine with Stop, and eliminate Go. Implemented initial version of extension syncing. The onChanged event is now working in the extensions experimental cookies API,” noting that additional modifications were made for Chrome running on Mac OS X and Linux.

Google Chrome 6.0 suffered a major boost at the start of this month, when support for WebM was introduced. Google is one of the driving forces behind the WebM project, an initiative designed to “open” video for the web, joined by the likes of Mozilla and Opera. At this point in time, Google, Mozilla and Opera have all built WebM support into the early development milestone of the next iterations of Chrome, Firefox and Opera. Of course, the main goal is to have Chrome 6.0, Firefox 4.0 and Opera 10.60 support VP8 as an HTML 5 video codec.
