The latest Stable release of Google Chrome is a testament to the fast pace of development for the company’s open source browser. Just a month after the introduction of the latest Beta milestone of Chrome for Windows, Google has wrapped up a new release. Chrome 4.1.249.1036 is the Stable Build of the first minor update to version 4.0.249.89, which was also a Stable release of the browser, and also made available for Windows users. In fact, according to Orit Mazor, from the Google Chrome Team, the latest update now being served to end users through the Stable channel is designed to bring to the table new features and security fixes, to kick up a notch v.4.0.

Early adopters that have followed the evolution of Chrome closely already know that the 4.1 Stable update is designed to introduce some new features for Windows users. Initially planned for Chrome 5.0, automatic translation and fine-grained privacy controls were first delivered with the 4.1 Beta, and are now ready for the general public as the browser version graduated to the Stable channel.

“Google Chrome’s translation feature uses the supercool Google Translate technology -- today, it works across 52 languages and can automatically detect and translate entire websites in less than a second. In Chrome, the language detection takes place in the browser, not on Google servers. If the page isn’t in a language you know, Chrome offers to translate it for you by sending it through Google Translate,” Darin Fisher, software engineer, noted.

Google Chrome 4.1.249.1036 Stable is available exclusively for Windows and can be downloaded via the links at the bottom of this article. Users that would not manually upgrade 4.0 to 4.1 would be served automatic updates in the next few days, Fisher stated.

The “stable release also comes with some new privacy features and a tweak to our Google Update technology. Now, there’s a set of ‘Content Settings’ options that let you manage how browser cookies, images, JavaScript, plug-ins, and pop-ups are handled on a site-by-site basis. For example, you can block all cookies except for the ones from sites you trust. We’ve also implemented a new approach to our Google Update technology, which allows us to remove the unique ID from Google Update while still preserving our ability to determine the number of active users and keep everyone up-to-date with the latest security updates and speed improvements. Chrome has many other existing and new features to help you manage your information,” Fisher added.
