To fix extension installation issues

A new update to the Stable channel of Google’s open source browser was shipped and is available for download. The Mountain View-based search giant has released the update in a move designed to fix issues in which users were unable to install certain extensions for the browser. Google Chrome 4.1.249.1042 is now up for grabs via the Stable channel, Mark Larson, from the Google Chrome Team, reveals. As it was the case with previous 4.0 and 4.1 versions released, the latest update to the Stable channel for Chrome is available exclusively to users of Windows.

"This release fixes an issue with some extensions not installing from the Google Chrome extensions gallery," Larson informed. According to reports from end users, extensions failing to install were the exception rather than the rule. However, it seems that Google managed to get to the bottom of this issue, with the latest refresh fixing the problem, sporadic as it might have been.

With the delivery of Chrome 4.0 at the start of this year, Google made a critical step toward opening up its open source browser for customization. Back in January, Nick Baum, Chrome product manager, noted that users had available in excess of 1,500 new features via the extension gallery for the browser.

The Mountain View-based search giant’s move is designed to deliver a similar level of flexibility enjoyed by Mozilla Firefox for Chrome when it comes down to extending their browser. After all, it proved a success for Firefox, and it is one of the aspects that consistently manage to attract users to Mozilla’s open source browser.

Earlier this month, Google shipped the first minor update to v4.0. The company pushed Google Chrome 4.1 in the Stable channel delivering new features that were initially planned for version 5.0. In this regard, version 4.1 delivered integration of Google Translate technology for Chrome and brought to the table new privacy options for users.
