Stable release

Google might be targeting users of Linux and Mac OS X operating systems, but without a doubt, the company’s main focus is Windows. At the start of this week, the Mountain View-based search giant kicked up a notch the stable version of Google Chrome, but only for users of Microsoft’s proprietary platform. In parallel with the bits offered through the Stable channel, Google is also providing early adopters with Beta and Dev builds of the open source browser.

“Google Chrome's Stable channel has been updated to version 3.0.195.38. (The Stable channel is still Windows-only.) This release fixes a couple of browser crashes: fixes a crash while typing in the omnibox. Fixes a crash while playing mp4 videos with odd sizes, such as 1366x768,” noted Mark Larson, from Google Chrome Team.

The latest update provided by Google through the Dev Channel was made available at the end of the past week. Google Chrome 4.0.266.0 Dev is currently up for grabs but only for Windows and Linux. Build 4.0.266.0 was an update delivered for Windows and Linux users of Chrome, with the promise that the Mac OS X flavor of the open source browser is in the works and coming soon.

Ahead of the 4.0.266.0 Dev update, the search giant offered users Google Chrome 4.0.249.30 Beta the past week. The Beta development milestone is the only build of Chrome that users of Windows, Mac OS X and Linux can install and start using immediately. Furthermore, the Beta release also brings to the table Google Chrome extensions. However, yet again not all platform users are treated as equals, with Google Chrome extensions being offered only for Windows and Linux. With the release of Google Chrome 4.0.249.30 Beta, Google is making one step closer to its vision of offering enhanced customization capabilities for the open source browser via extensions.
