While it’s working to finalize the next major iteration of its open source browser, the successor of Chrome 8.0, Google is also building version 10.0 in parallel.

The Mountain View-based search giant did get early adopters used to providing a plethora of testing releases, and following the launch of Beta Build 9.0.597.67 a new Dev Channel development milestone is now available for download.

Testers can now grab Google Chrome 10.0.642.2 Dev and start playing around with the release, which is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Chrome 10.0.642.2 Dev brings to the table a new Build of the browser’s V8 JavaScript engine, which has been kicked up a notch to version 3.0.7.0.

Google did not detail any of the changes implemented to the JS engine, but the company has indicated strong commitment in the past to boosting performance with each update ahead of anything else.

At the same time, testers will be able to notice additional changes. Those that ran into problems involving the new tabbed preferences dialog are bound to see improvements in the overall experience.

Google introduced a number of fixes and changes designed to soften the rough edges of the tabbed preferences dialog.

The Mountain View-based search company opted to have the about:sync integrated with the tabbed preference dialog, in addition to the fixes delivered.

For testers working with PDF files in frames Chrome 10.0.642.2 Dev now offers both “Save” and “Print” options right in the context menu.

There are more changes, but they target flavors of Chrome 10 Dev designed to run on Mac OS X or Linux.

Earlier this week, Google delivered an update to the Beta Channel, allowing early adopters to test Chrome 9.0.597.67.

Of course, per Google’s fast pace release cycle, Chrome 9.0 is fast approaching the moment when it will graduate from Beta, and approximately at the same time, Chrome 10.0 will move from the Dev to the Beta Channel, with Chrome 11.0 starting to ship to testers.
