The turn-by-turn navigation solutions niche for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform has been badly covered by developers, but as of lately it appears that the number of apps is growing.

Windows Phone 7 users who are forced to operate the default Telenav GPS app that some carriers bundle with their devices for a monthly fee will be happy to know that Garmin is now offering an alternative, Garmin Streetpilot.

The application share similar features that can be used with Garmin GPS personal navigators.

Although the program requires EDGE or 3G to download maps or other relevant information, it makes as a nice alternative for those who are traveling in areas with no network coverage.

Garmin Streetpilot offers users voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions including street names, real-time traffic updates (no additional cost), integrated Local Search and millions of points of interest.

All maps are automatically storaged so users can browse maps they have recently viewed outside of data coverage areas.

Obviously, the application can be used in both portrait and landscape modes and allows users to place calls directly from search listing.

Other interesting features of the application include:

- Speed limits for most major roads;
- Lane assist with junction view for complicated interchanges;
- Address book integration to navigate to contacts;
- Current weather conditions and forecast
.

The only downsides of Garmin Streetpilot are the spicy $39.99 price and the lack of a trial version that could be tested before purchase.

However, those interested to buy the application should know that Garmin Streetpilot requires a one-time payment, instead of a monthly fee.

Garmin Streetpilot is available for download from Marketplace via Zune and is compatible with all Windows Phone 7 devices.

On related news, the same application is available for iPhone users and can be purchased via iTunes App Store for $34.99

Fantastic looking, quality app...I guess, as it's a pity I cannot try before I buy :(

I have this app on my Windows Phone (paid $34.99). It works great and I didn't have to buy a seperate GPS unit. $34.99 is a great deal.
