Microsoft has opened up the beta testing process of Windows Live OneCare Beta 2.5 to the general public. Because it is a free beta OneCare 2.5 can be installed on more than three machines belonging to the same user unlike the paid version which is limited in this sense. Microsoft revealed that all the current users of OneCare will be automatically updated to version 2.5 when it will ship but failed to reveal the actual date when the release will be made available.

"Windows Live OneCare Beta (v2.5) is the newest version of OneCare, the all-in-one software that helps keep your PC safe and secure. From virus scanning, to automatic backup of important files, to automatic printing sharing for all the PCs in your household, OneCare helps manage it all for you. And it's delivered to you in a smooth, hassle-free package," Microsoft stated.

The Redmond company introduced Windows Live OneCare 2.0 back in the summer of 2007, touting a one-size-fits-all security tune-up, back-up and management solution. In this respect, Microsoft has not highlighted any new high-impact features added to version 2.5. Moreover, the public beta will not offer users the opportunity to play around with OneCare Online Photo Backup, as the feature is not available in the OneCare 2.5 release.

"We think you're going to like all the great things about Windows Live OneCare, and as a beta program participant you'll have the chance to try out all the new features before anyone else. Please be aware that the beta is only available in English. And the beta is a pre-commercial release of a new version of OneCare provided for purposes of evaluation and feedback. At this time, we ask that all support requests be submitted in English," reads a message on the official page for Windows Live OneCare 2.5 Beta.
