An updated version of the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility is currently available for download from Microsoft. According to the Redmond company, the solution is addressed at customers that are running the latest iteration of Windows client and server operating systems. In this regard, the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility will integrate seamlessly with both Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2. By leveraging the utility, customers will be able to restore backups created on computers running Windows XP and on Windows Server 2003 to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 machines.

“Removable Storage Manager (RSM) is no longer included in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2. If you want to restore a backup from a tape device, please perform the restore on one of the following operating systems: Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008,” Microsoft advised.

Served as Update for Windows 7 (KB974674), the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility is available through the Microsoft Download Center free of charge. As far as the Windows 7 customers are concerned, they will need to be running a genuine version of the operating system. Prior to downloading the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility, users will need to have their platforms pass the anti-piracy check of Windows 7. The same is not valid for Windows Server 2008 R2.

There are no less than four downloads available for end users, in accordance with the different CPU architectures Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are running on. Customers will be able to download the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility for all supported 32-bit (x86-based) versions of Windows 7, 64-bit (x64) Windows 7,x64 Windows Server 2008 R2 and IA-64 Windows Server 2008 R2.

After the NT Backup Restore Utility is installed, users will be able to locate it by making their way via the Start menu to All Programs, Accessories, and then System Tools.
