Download Free Windows 7 RTM Siena Theme

A new theme available for download from Microsoft is designed to bring a little piece of Italy to the desktops of Windows 7 computers worldwide. The Terre de Siena theme pack, which is offered only through the Italian version of the Windows Personalization Gallery, offers a collection of imagery from the Tuscany region in Italy. Siena’s Piazza del Campo, featured in one of the wallpapers, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an important tourist attraction, along with other landmarks.

The Windows 7 Terre de Siena theme, which is, of course, available as a free download from the Windows Personalization Gallery, contains imagery of a number of sites from Siena, including Amiata, Val d’Orcia, Chianti, Val di Chiana and Val di Merse. Some of the backgrounds capture the unique medieval cityscape that Siena is famous for worldwide.

A tribe of Etruscans called the Saina were the first to settle in the region some 900 to 400 years BC. However, the legend says that the town of Siena was actually founded by Senius, the son of Remus. If Remus sounds like a familiar name, it is perhaps due to the legend involving a she-wolf suckling infants Romulus and Remus. Romulus is, together with Remus, one of the twin founders of Rome, and the source of the name for what is now Italy’s capital.

As you will be able to see from the images, Terre de Sienna is not focused exclusively on the city, but rather offers a perspective over the entire region. It’s only too bad that no images were included of the famous Palio di Siena biannual horse race. However, users will be able to use Piazza del Campo as their Windows 7 desktop wallpaper, the square being the location in which Palio di Siena is held on July 2 and August 16 every year.
