Microsoft has updated a tool that is offering customers the possibility to streamline upgrades to the latest versions of its Windows client platform. Version 5.6 of the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) is now available through the Microsoft Download Center. As it was the case with the previous releases of the utility, the latest Build is offered as a free download. Customers can leverage the Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.6 in the context in which they need to upgrade older machines to either Windows Vista or Windows 7.

“The Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) version 5.6 contains the necessary tools and documentation to evaluate and mitigate application compatibility issues before deploying Windows 7, Windows Vista, a Windows Update, or a new version of Windows Internet Explorer in your environment,” Microsoft stated.

Older applications, tailored to a specific version of Windows, might have not evolved to embrace Vista or Windows 7. In this regard, ACT is a great tool to assess a specific system for possible compatibility issues with the latest releases of Windows. Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.6 will provide customers with a comprehensive application-compatibility evaluation report that will enable them to upgrade with as little problems as possible. The promise from Microsoft is that users turning to ACT for application-compatibility testing will be able to assess a system with minimum costs, and get a better experience when upgrading to Windows 7 or Vista.

“You can use the ACT features to: verify an application's compatibility with a new version of the Windows operating system, or a Windows Update, including determining your risk assessment. Become involved in the ACT Community, including sharing your risk assessment with other ACT users. Test your Web applications and Web sites for compatibility with new releases and security updates to the Windows Internet Explorer Internet browser,” the Redmond company added.
