14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft Streets & Trips and the company’s new Cruisin’ the National Parks Trivia Sweepstakes are available for those users actually taking a road trip through the United States this summer, but customers can also get a taste of the US through a new theme pack.
The Classic American Road Trip Theme is now available for download, with users running Windows 7 being able to install the new personalization content immediately, and have the wallpapers packed in the theme rotate on their desktops at regular intervals.
Offered through the Windows Personalization Gallery, the Classic American Road Trip Theme contains no less than 15 background images.
Users can check out the contents of the theme via the screenshots at the bottom of this article, but they can also download it and extract the wallpapers with the help of an archiver, or install it on top of Windows 7.
“Grab your cat-eye sunglasses and jump in the station wagon! Summer is here and it’s time for an all-American road trip,” reads Microsoft’s description of the download.
“This free theme for Windows 7 takes you back to the age of vintage cars, Route 66, and cheap gasoline. Classic American scenery provided. Bring your own lemonade and picnic basket.”
Undoubtedly, most users are already familiar with the landmark Route 66, which no respectable package of U.S. based road trip content could shun.
Even if it’s no longer considered a highway in the United States, Route 66 is still referred to as the "Main Street of America" or the "Mother Road".
In its heyday, Route 66 linked Chicago to Los Angeles, passing through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.
This highway was even celebrated in songs, with the famous Get Your Kicks On Route 66 by Bobby Troup or Bob Dylan’s Route 66, and even in a TV series in the 1960s.
