Just in case your Windows 7 desktop is in need of some fortifications, Microsoft has updated the Windows Personalization Gallery with a new theme featuring wallpapers of various castles across Europe.

The Castles of Europe theme is available for download free of charge, offering users an impressive collection of background images, and taking them on a journey through both history and architecture in several countries across the continent.

There are no less than 21 wallpapers packed into the Windows 7 Castles of Europe theme.

As usual, Windows 7 users need only download and install the theme, but customers running other operating systems can also grab the wallpaper pack. However, they’ll have to extract the content using an archiver and set the wallpapers as background images one by one.

From medieval ruins to Gothic Revival castles, this free theme for Windows 7 brings to your desktop some of Europe’s most beautiful châteaus, fortresses, and castillos. Includes architecture from Scandinavia, France, Spain, and the UK.

History buffs and architecture connoisseurs will undoubtedly enjoy the imagery packed into this particular Windows 7 theme.

As I’ve said before, the content in theme packs such as Castles of Europe could use a little extra information accompanying the imagery.

In this particular case, Microsoft is only offering details about the countries in which the castles in the wallpapers can be found.

On a range of themes, the images packed also contained some light metadata, but still, the software giant at least provided some additional information which I’m sure users appreciated.

By all means, have a look at the screenshots included below in order to get an idea of what’s in store with the Windows 7 Castles of Europe theme, or just go ahead and download it, since it doesn’t cost you anything.

The Windows 7 Castles of Europe theme is available for download here.

I've seen several of them myself, but face the same problem as you in naming them. One, for sure, is the one showing a wooden walkway over still water to reach a squarish castle--that is Leeds Castle in England. I don't remember the county, but it is southeast of London, maybe halfway to Ashford and the coast.

I now recognize a few others, but they're hard to describe. One is Mont Ste. Michel off the northern coast of France, another is Chambord in France's Loire Valley, another colorful one is ??? but about a half hour NNE of Lisbon, Portugal, another is in or near Copenhagen, Denmark and another with round towers is in Talinn, Estonia. There's also another with pointy spires which I think is the Alcazar in Segovia, Spain. Wish I could recall more without poring through all my vacation photos.

Well, right enough, my first thought on the subject, is why did they not provided the names and places of the castles as a footnote, not across the pages, that would spoil it for sure..
