A new free theme from Microsoft for Windows 7 is designed to celebrate the summer of soccer/football. At the time of this article, Mexico and the Republic of South Africa are 1:1 in the first Group A game. In fact, it looks like this is the final result since the referee has sounded the final whistle. Football fans that are running Windows 7 can grab a 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa theme from the Windows Personalization Gallery to help them tailor their desktops to the sporting event of the year.

The content included in the Windows 7 FIFA World Cup South Africa theme pack is offered by Electronic Arts, and is obviously designed to promote the game. “Bring the excitement of the World Cup to your desktop with this Windows 7 theme, featuring stunning graphics from the Electronic Arts 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa game,” reads the description of the theme.

EA is only one among the many brands that choose Windows 7’s personalization options as a vehicle for promotion. For quite some time now Microsoft Advertising has been running a brand marketing pilot which allows companies from around the world to supply Windows 7 themes which users can download and deploy for free. Of course, in this manner brands benefit from increased awareness, while users get to satisfy their thirst for customization.

While the opening match at Soccer City may be done, the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa is just starting. Later today, Uruguay will play France, with two matches scheduled for tomorrow Argentina vs. Nigeria, and Korea vs. Greece. Football fans are, of course, in for quite a treat as the 19th FIFA World Cup unfolds. 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa will conclude on 11 July 2010 with the final match.
